YMCA Bundalong Replanting Project
(64 Byrnes Road North, Joyner) A joint venture project between the YMCA, Koala Action Inc., Moreton Bay Koala Rescue and Queensland Koala Crusaders Inc. was developed to replant koala food trees and other natives at this site. Moreton Bay Regional Council also provided funding via their Community Grants Programme. The Australian Koala Foundation donated $1,000 towards the purchase of koala food tree tube stock.
The intention was to enhance the food, shelter and dispersal opportunities at the existing site for the residential koala population and develop a wildlife corridor that will facilitate movement along the North Pine River. It was KAI’s hope to recreate the Regional Ecosystem at that location prior to clearing. Ongoing work at this location in the future will extend this corridor further.
YMCA removed non-native tree species, levelled the site and marked out 3 replanting areas. They were responsible for the provision of water and maintaining the grassed areas surrounding the replanting sites. Poisoning of the site to kill grasses and weeds was completed in August 21 in preparation for the mulch to be purchased, delivered and spread in October 21.
Janet Mangan utilised a MBRC Community grant to undertake site preparation (mulch/holes, auger holes) and plant Area 1 (1728m2). KAI/MBKR and QKC were responsible for funding the work in Area 2 (731m2) and Area 3 (1462m2).
Area 1 was planted out with 500 tube stock in February 22. Twenty-one employees from Stone and Wood Brewery, 11 members of QKC, 4 members of MBKR Inc. and the 3 members of KAI did all the hard work. Areas 2 and 3 were planted out in April 22. Six KAI members, 3 MBKR members and 5 QKC members planted 600 tube stock.
Independent Tree Services were subcontracted to purchase, deliver and spread the mulch as well as augur the holes. Pine Rivers Community Nursery supplied the plants, ¼ of which were koala food trees.
Maintenance will be a shared responsibility with YMCA and KAI when volunteers are available, with the option of KAI subcontracting that work out if funds are available.
